The headwaters of the Boardman River begin in and around the village of Kalkaska and the headwaters of the Manistee and Rapid Rivers are nearby. These blue ribbon trout streams are one reason for the celebration of the National Trout Festival. Also for the outdoor enthusiasts are the many parks and recreational areas nearby to enjoy picnicking, swimming, boating, fishing and hunting. Always available during the spring, summer and fall are the many beautiful and challenging golf courses in the area along with several biking and hiking trails.

In the winter time, Kalkaska offers hundreds of groomed snowmobiling and cross country ski trails that lead west to the Traverse City area and north and east toward Mancelona and the Gaylord area, offering snowmobilers hundreds of miles of some of the best trails in Michigan. Most of the snowmobile trails are easily accessible from the parking lot area.
